I'm really enjoying this series I am doing on Pat Benatar. What a fabulously talented vocalist!
"Heartbreaker" is from Pat's studio album In The Heat Of The Night (1979). Written and composed by Geoff Gill and Cliff Wade, the song had first been recorded by English singer Jenny Darren on her 1978 album Queen of Fools, and Benatar adjusted the original lyrics, as references such as "A to Zed" and "moonraker" would have likely confused American listeners.
(Many people think that this is an original song by Pat and it is not. I strongly recommend you check out Jenny Darren's version.)
And on an interesting sidenote:
"Heartbreaker" was the second single released off In the Heat of the Night after the first, "If You Think You Know How to Love Me", failed to reach the US Billboard Hot 100. "Heartbreaker" spent four and a half months on the chart, the fourth longest of all of her singles before it actually broke and was almost sent out to pasture. Some would call it a sleeper hit. I think this is a lesson that can be learned by all of us. It was not popular right away, it was more popular on album-oriented rock stations, as it peaked at number 13 on Tunecasters Rock Tracks chart in March 1980. The song peaked at number 16 in Canada and at number 14 in New Zealand, although it only reached number 95 in Australia.
Let's check out this legendary track together!
