This chest voice exercise is among the most standard, but is valuable nonetheless. The vowels chosen are entirely arbitrary---feel free to substitute any two (or more) vowels in the same pattern. The goal is to phonate fully and clearly throughout the vowel changes and across the notes. Beginning every other note with an "N" or an "L" sound is done to encourage constant, full phonation when switching from an open vowel to a more closed one.
