This exercise is all about navigating intervals. Since the pattern can be broken down into a downward leap, a large upward leap, repeat, it is necessary to approach each low note in as relaxed a way as possible. If this approach is correct, no tension should be carried across the larger upward intervals. Theoretically, that approach should carry the voice all the way through the peak of the exercise with minimal effort.
