The early 90s were heavily steeped in flannel, the "Seattle Sound" dominated the music scene. Many notable vocalists were born to the alternative music movement but, arguably, the signature sound of his gritty, yarling vocals caused Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam to rule the genre. Though Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains reportedly hate the term grunge, preferring to be referred to as rock bands, the term has become inextricably linked to the "dirty" sounds associated with the era. Pearl Jam has cited being influenced by many punk bands as well as arena rock bands of the 70s such as Zeppelin, Kiss and The Who. This is worth mentioning as Pearl Jam's sound is less heavy than other grunge bands of the early 90s, and never fails to deliver, "the hook".

Eddie Vedder wrote the book on the deep, guttural, distortive style associated with the "Seattle Sound". He has great tone and energy and is one the most copied singers in rock music.
