In 2018, Fender discovered that half of all beginners and aspirational guitar players are women and that the phenomenon is happening worldwide -- suggesting that the future of rock might just be 50 per cent female.
If you’re paying attention, most of today’s best rock music is already being made by women. Women made some of the best albums of 2018. But you wouldn’t know that from looking at the charts though, or from tuning into alternative radio.
And you would think with the introduction of streaming services that women would have a level playing field. But Spotify’s five most streamed artists of 2018 were all men. Spotify's five most streamed tracks were also all male.
Guitarist and singer-songwriter Laura Marling said, “If you prevent women from seeing any examples of them achieving, then it prevents them from believing they can achieve it.”
So let’s take a look at some of the exceptional women in rock today including:
Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes
Ellie Rowsell of Wolf Alice
PJ Harvey
Annie Clark of St. Vincent
Mitski
While it's true that there are plenty of excellent female rock artists out there today, who are inspiring young women, there's never been a shortage of inspiration. Women might just be rock’s last hope.
