In three albums, we’ve been taken through three decades of music’s past, through dozens of subgenres and strange sounds thanks to Ruban Nielson, the band’s creator.
When we listen to Unknown Mortal Orchestra's music, or any music for that matter, we associate our own meanings with a track. Ruban doesn’t want you to think his music is about his life, he’s just trying to improve your day with music.
“If I made someone’s life easier with the album, that’s the closest reason that exists for making art that I’ve been able to find.”
But the lyrics and moods of these tracks are entirely dependent on the headspace of Ruban. He invites new -- and sometimes strange, experiences into his life, hoping to capture those feelings in his music. Whether that’s becoming a father, indulging in rampant drug use or inviting a second partner into his marriage. Ruban is willing to put himself in some emotionally terrifying situations for the sake of his art.
This video essay uncovers the themes behind psychedelic-pop outfit, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The life experiences of Ruban Nielson, the band's creator is responsible. Their debut record was very mellow as Ruban Nielson had just started a family. His sophomore was recorded in a basement after returning home from a drug-fueled tour. He then invited a second partner into his marriage for this third. Here's what Ruban has to say about his latest record, Sex + Food.
