I'd like to start off by talking about Chris Cornell, and not just about Black Hole Sun and Soundgarden.
When Nirvana first hit the scene in the early 90s, it seemed as though it was actually uncool to be melodic and to be a virtuoso guitar player, and particularly lead guitar.
Much of the music that came out at that time was either amelodic (without melody or at least without much melody) or on a quest to stay away from anything that felt like it was Classic Rock or Heavy Metal. Some chord arrangements were written around influences that felt more like 60s Garage Band or 60s psychedelia, instead of traditional power chord anthems that had dominated for over a decade.
Now back to Chris!
In addition to the dumbing down of guitar, or at least guitar virtuosity and guitar hero icons, this was also true of high range singing. With small exceptions, maybe Layne Staley and an outlier such as Jeff Buckley, there were virtually no high range singers other than Chris Cornell.
So, not only did Chris Cornell find a way to marry the Seattle sound together with breaking the rules of high range singing, he also did this with absolutely extraordinary songwriting.
Black Hole Sun is no exception.
It's almost as if the Beatles had come in with psychedelia and a creepy vibe to create and raise the bar for the "Seattle Sound."
So it was a privilege and an honor to take on this song because I feel more closely related to songs like this from Chris from this era than most all of the grunge era combined.
I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it for you.
