A number from our new musical theater song cycle "Eight Immortals" - this one is inspired by the immortal Cao Guojiu, a highly moral court official with a brother who couldn't seem to stay out of trouble. This song reinterprets the pair as modern brothers, one of whom has come seeking absolution.

LYRICS

Hey, remember when I stole dad’s credit card?

God, I was such a s*** at seventeen

You told me it was crazy still I ordered that guitar

and the xbox, and and the eighty-inch flatscreen

and it’s wasn’t pretty when mom found out

but you being, well, you - of course you came through

and you said somebody must’ve hacked into dad’s account,

then you got up and made a call, reversed the charges, returned it all,

We were only kids but you already knew

How to make it right

you’ve always had a way of

showing up to save the day

when I least deserve it,

You make it right

Every stupid thing I’ve done

You’ve had this super power, this second sight,

To take the mess I’ve made and make it right

Or what about the time I had a whim and spent

A summer getting drunk in Monterrey (oops!)

Just didn’t go to work and I was three months late on rent,

but when I got back, somehow all my bills were paid

And I know you’d never admit you wrote that note to my fiancee, after I walked away

Saying I was sorry, and all the reasons I had to go

You know I’ve started losing count

Of all the times that you’ve bailed me out

‘Cause even when I run, I know you’ll stay

And you’ll make it right

You’ve always had a knack for

for knowing how to have my back

when I don’t deserve it,

You make it right

Every selfish stunt I’ve pulled

Here comes your super power, your second sight

To take the mess I’ve made and make it right

And I don’t know what’s wrong with me,

Why is it so hard to thank you?

I’ve taken for granted the fact you’ll always be there

Saving me from myself when I don’t know how to

Little brother, I don’t know what I would do without you

The nurse just left, she said that you’ve been out for quite a while

So I don’t know if you’re listening to me

The doctors aren’t sure if you’re responding to the trial

I guess we’ll wait and see

But I can’t help feeling

Now it’s my turn to fix this for you

But I don’t know what to do

Waiting for an answer, or some sign that I still might learn

the magic words I'm supposed to say, to make this go away

I swear there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do

If I only knew

How to make it right

Take your burden, make it mine

It should be my life on the line

God knows I deserve it

You’d make it right

If it were me there in that bed

There isn’t any battle you wouldn’t fight

Well I don’t have your superpower, no second sight,

But I’ll stay right here

As many days and nights

As it takes

To make it right

Make It Right
