In this video, KTVA student Kati Cher takes on Nirvana's LITHIUM! Suffice it to say, she takes us for a ride through this song's ups and downs!

As many know, this song is about being bipolar, to the extent that Kurt Cobain expresses the sentiments of a serial killer. It also shares concentric rings with any sort of mental disorders, and it's pretty true to life about that.

To me, some of Kurt's lyrics are pretty nonsensical. For example, the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit:

"With the lights out, it's less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid, and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto, an albino

A mosquito, my libido".

I remember a rehearsal where we were trying to cover this song and remember the lyrics, and everyone was just trying to rhyme nonsense:

"Here we are now entertain us

I feel stupid and heinous,

Here we are now I'm famous,

A mulatto, a gelato, an albino,

I am a wino, a mosquito, my libido, a burrito, hey that's neeto",

and so on.

I remember seeing an interview with Dave Grohl talking about how Kirt would literally be writing these lyrics down in the studio on a doily and pieces of paper out of the trashcan. And somehow the world took it as some prolific thing. Even the title of this song "Teen Spirit" got its name from some popular teen boys cologne that his girlfriend liked at the time (or something like that).

However, lithium is a different story.

Lithium is a drug that's administered as a mood stabilizer to treat certain mental illnesses, such as: mania, hypomania, bipolar disorder, where your mood changes between feeling very high (mania) and very low (depression).

And we all know what happened with Kurt. Depression is real, and I mean very, very real.

So while other of Kurt's lyrics might not have been as prolific and he might not have even intended this one to be that, it certainly is!

If you read the lyrics, I think you'll get a closer look as to what might've been going on in Kurt's on head when he wrote them.

I hope this song brings about some awareness and compassion for those dealing with such a tough mental disorder.
