Misery Business - Paramore cover - Kati Cher - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

If Elvis and the Ramones had a baby? Whoa.

What do you get when a lead singer cites Elvis, the Ramones, Jawbreaker and Etta James as her influences? You get Paramore. Paramore, an American rock band formed in 2004, with a heavy pop/punk influence, hails from Franklin Tennessee and is fronted by the charismatic, Hayley Williams.

“Misery Business” was the lead single from Paramore’s second album, Riot! At a September 2018 concert Williams announced that the band was going to stop playing “Misery Business”, “for the last time for a really long time”, mainly due to a line that was deemed sexist. The lyric in question goes, “once a whore, you’re nothing more/ I’m sorry, that will never change.”. Williams states that she wrote that line in her diary when she was a teenager, “feeding into a lie that I’d bought into, just like so many other teenagers- and many adults, before me”. Williams has matured, as have her views on women, initially omitting that line in concert and now, evidently, weary of rehashing the controversy, has retired the song from the set list. At least for now.

Fortunately for us, Kati Cher has determined to try her hand at this kick a$$ anthem of teen angst and she nailed it! Nailed it with sledge hammer. Rock on Kati!
