More times than not, a vocal coach will sit behind the piano and play scales expecting you to simply hit certain notes without understanding the correct way to hit those notes and what we call vocal tract shaping.

What is vocal tract shaping?

Simply put, the vocal tract is your mouth and throat, predominantly your throat.

I've heard it said many times that we should sing like we speak. I've come to learn that that is just not true.

Let me explain: when we sing, it requires a lot more sound pressure in the throat than when we speak. It's just simple math.

So what do we do with this information?

We need to learn to shape our vowels according to the amount of sound pressure in the throat. The higher up we go, the smaller the vowels need to be and the more closely related they need to be.

In this video, we cover this very important subject.
