Legend. Icon. Rock-god.
Whichever expression you prefer all roads lead to Ronnie James Dio. Considered to be the foremost melodic heavy metal singer of all time, Ronnie influenced a generation with an unapologetic love for metal. From Elf and Rainbow to Black Sabbath and Dio, Ronnie’s music inspired and empowered an entire era of headbangers. Somehow an Italian kid from New Hampshire, raised on Mario Lanza’s sophisticated operatic stylings, managed to harness vocal lightning, with a dash of white magic, and set the music world ablaze.
Neon Knights was released in 1980 on Black Sabbath’s Heaven and Hell, their first album featuring Ronnie James Dio. Hastily written to fill time on the album’s A side, the lyrics were written by Dio. It seems hard to believe, nearly forty years later, that this song failed to chart in the U.S. If you are a metalhead, of a certain age, I’ll bet you sustained some serious head-banging whiplash the summer this song hit the FM airwaves.
