It was the late 90s, 1997 if I remember this correctly, and to be honest, I was struggling to find music I could relate to, appreciate, and, oddly, music with a good sense of melody.
Being heavily involved in 70s rock music and then 80s metal all of my life, it seemed that the 70s and 80s bands worked in direct competition for melody, unique catchy songs, and musicianship.
When Nirvana hit in 1990, it seemed as though the competition was to be A-Melodic and musicianship was deemphasized.
I'm not saying there weren't a few exceptions such as any band Chris Cornell was in, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, and a few outlier songs such as "No Rain" by Blind Melon, "She's So High" by Tal Bachman, and a couple of others.
But for me, these bands were very few and far between compared to coming off the 70s and 80s.
So when I first heard "Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden (not to be confused with Soundgarden :-)) I was pleasantly surprised.
Actually, the verses to the song are quite monotonous. It's the same melody over and over again. But the chorus delivers a beautiful, sensitive, moving melody with an emotive lyric.
So I said to myself (yes sometimes I talk to myself and there are definitely voices in my head!), someday I will do that song. :-)
Well, today is that day :-)
I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed performing it.
