Journey - Separate Ways - Steve Perry - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Tutorial
Steve Perry is no doubt one of the greatest rock vocalists that's ever lived but as I explore his departure from that velvety smooth sound toward a heavier vocal, my analysis may not please his die-hard fans.
For those of you who have closely followed Journey’s music, which version of Steve Perry did you prefer, the sensitive, tenory sound or the heavier, edgier one? Let me know in the comments!
As we look at his isolated vocal track from “Separate Ways” we’ll see how he hadn’t really developed that distorted sound he was trying to get and didn’t have the abdominal strength to support it.
We’ll also see how he used more of a covered, throaty sound to try and get more of an edge which in my opinion contributed to costing him his voice.
