How To Sing Higher - Ken Tamplin
I know this is going to sound crazy, but please hear me out.
You would not believe how much "psychology" there is to singing.
First I’d like to say that giving yourself "permission" to sing a certain song or sing a certain high note is key.
Let me explain a little further. When the mind/body starts to panic, fearing it is unable to do a certain task, it goes into a fight or flight mode. When this happens, the body develops incredible tension.
Tension mounts as we approach this task that we are afraid we might not be able to do. This becomes one of the most counterproductive things we can do when we sing (You will hear high-level sports athletes say this all the time about achieving various levels of their sport).
OK! Let's pause this thought for a minute and back-track.
When we learn the mechanics of singing (or a sport, or whatever), confidence is built in knowing that we are able to do this task repetitively.
In effect, this establishes incredible confidence in the task we are about to do, and in this case, it's singing a high note.
One quick little story: I have coached an incredible amount of soccer in my day. At one point, while auditioning kids for an All-Star team I was looking to build, I watched 30+ kids at the penalty line of a soccer box try to kick the ball over what is similar to an American football field goal post. Every one of the boys struggled to try to kick the ball over the top bar line of the soccer box/field goal.
I walked over, explained the "mechanics" of getting your foot underneath the ball, and then proceeded to easily kick the ball way into the field goal.
Once the boys saw that it was possible, it gave them "permission" to kick the ball above the box and every one of the boys did it except one. What they had believed was impossible for them to do, they learned was actually very possible for them to do. They just needed to know how to properly go about it, and they also needed to believe that it was entirely possible to do. Showing them how to do it empowered them to do something they had never done before, and to do it well.
That should tell you something about "seeing yourself" hit a certain note or sing a certain song you thought was not possible.
You just need to know the mechanics of how to do it, and know that it can be done.
