How Long Should I Warm Up My Voice? Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
This is actually a very sensitive and important question we should be asking ourselves as singers.
Before I answer this, I want to draw an analogy.
I don't care what sport you're about to play, but it would be crazy not to warm up before playing that sport so as not to tear a muscle or ligament or even possibly break a bone.
Stretching plays a key role in the longevity of an athlete.
So if this is true for athletes what makes us think we are immune from this with our voice?
And yet, all too often, I see so many singers barely spend five minutes doing some weird exercises before they go out to World Cup level concerts with their voice.
That's just plain irresponsible.
I personally will spend approximately 50 to 70 minutes warming up my voice before I sing.
But I have developed stamina to be able to do this safely and correctly so that when I do go to sing or perform (often times for several hours at a time), I can handle that kind of endurance.
My suggestion is to start warming up approximately 15 minutes or so and try to work up to a full half hour prior to singing.
But not all warm ups are created equal.
And just singing a scale does not mean you were warming up correctly.
In my singing course, I take you through a series of specific exercises and things we do physically in order to prepare for singing.
I cover a few of these points in this video and I hope you will benefit from it.
