While the KC Royals were taking batting practice for Game 6 of the World Series, I had the IMMENSE pleasure of giving a master class to a group of 8th graders who participate in the Weill Music Institute's "Count Me In" program for singers.
To say I was immensely moved and inspired is the understatement of the year, as each singer brought talent, sincerity, curiosity and beauty to the table. It's 2 hours I shall not soon forget. At the very end, while still in teaching mode, I asked them if they would help me practice something - "just in case". Please watch and revel in the fact that young singers from the most unlikely of places are seeking out ways to experience classical music and opera, to express themselves in truly meaningful ways, and to grow in truth and beauty. Ah yes - the future is BEAUTIFUL, my friends!
PS - a HUGE salute to their teachers who are living, breathing HEROES in their lives.
