Arlo Parks - Devotion. An exclusive live performance for Vevo.

Arlo Parks is at full strength on her sophomore album, ‘My Soft Machine.’ Arriving last summer, its title hints at the poet-singer tiptoeing the uneasy balance beam of human experience. On the one hand, our bodies (“soft machines”) feel everything between hurt and love. “I wish I was bruise-less,” she shares on the album's curt tone-setting intro, “I wish I was seven and blameless.” On the other hand, Arlo knows that these kind of thoughts are a reaction to pain. To lose our scars would be to lose our essence, a theme she addresses on the very next track, “Impurities.” Longtime fans are devoted to her craft for exactly this reason: Parks is a verbose empath with a voice that whispers truths. Her ascendance mostly happened during the pandemic, when her music appeared as an oasis for people yearning for connection. “I know I’ve been a little bit off, and that’s my mistake,” is a line from her most popular song, “Eugene." The singer is a DSCVR Artists to Watch 2020 alum, and the following year her ‘Collapsed in Sunbeams’ album received widespread critical acclaim. But let’s go back to the new album. “Devotion" is a bit of a revelation. Loud, distorted, fuzzy guitars enter the chat, bringing a new flavor to the Parks palette. It’s perfect that we captured this one in studio, where her familiar craft finds a new angle - one that’s not afraid to pack a punch and leave a mark.
