Is there such a thing as a perfect key for a vocalist?
Today, we'll be talking about how you can choose keys that fit your voice like a glove.
First, there's no such thing as a perfect key for every singer.
Why is that? Well because any key that you choose could have very easy or very difficult notes you can sing.
Let’s say that you’ve found the key of G is typically pretty good for you-maybe you like sweet home alabama.
Well what if there’s another song in the key of G that has ALL G4s an octave above what you’re used to singing?—like the bridge in Creep?
That song is seriously hard to sing. But they’re both in G!
Now what I believe people are saying when they find keys that fit them is that there are a lot of songs that tend to hang out in a good area of their voice.
And that’s very possible!
And while you can’t guarantee that there’s a key that fits you perfectly, there are some what you call melodic tendencies.
Melody in case you don’t know is the main vocal line of a song, it’s the part you whistle—or in this case sing.
Now, when I say that melodies have some tendencies, what I mean is that for any key there are basically 3 notes (we call them chord tones) that you can sing for the main chord.
If you know any chord theory, then you will know that they are the 1st, 3rd and 5th degree of whatever chord you’re playing. And when you know the melody stays around this area, you can choose good songs that fit your voice.
