In this episode of Everything Music I explain the meaning, construction and application of Augmented Sixth and Neapolitan Sixth chords. I discuss the construction, voice leading and quick ways of identifying the Italian Sixth, French Sixth and German Sixth as well as the Neapolitan Sixth. The formulas are as follows:
Italian 6th - The only Augmented 6th chord that has 3 notes.
(b6 - 1 - #4) notes of the key you are in Ex. Key of C major the Italian Sixth would be made up of : Ab - C - F# (b6 - 1 -#4)
French 6th - Augmented 6th chord that has 4 notes.
(b6 - 1 - 2 - #4) notes of the key you are in Ex. Key of C major the French Sixth would be made up of : Ab - C - D - F# (b6 - 1 - 2 -#4) It is actually a Dom 7b5 chord if you make the A6 interval a b7 the chord would be A7b5 = Ab C D Gb
German 6th - Augmented 6th chord that has 4 notes.
(b6 - 1 - b3 - #4) notes of the key you are in Ex. Key of C major the German Sixth would be made up of : Ab - C - Eb - F# (b6 - 1 - b3 -#4) It is actually a Dom7 chord if you make the A6 interval a b7 the chord would be Ab7 = Ab C Eb Gb
