Sturgill Simpson - The Making of 'Turtles All the Way Down' (Vevo Footnotes)

Sturgill Simpson threw trad and pop country a major curve when he arrived on the scene with his sophomore album, 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music' in 2014. His debut a year previous had wonderful idiosyncrasies, with the twangadelic "Turtles All The Way Down," Simpson was plowing a new row for sure. "There's a gateway in our minds that leads somewhere out there, far beyond this plane," he sings, "where reptile aliens made of light, cut you open and pull out all your pain." The transcendence of tripping (on philosophical ideas) was in good hands with Mr S. That was a decade ago, and to celebrate its 10-year anniversary, we had Sturgill explain a few things about "Turtles." Like how he slipped and hit his head on the toilet after jumping from the shower to jot down the song's main idea, and like how Electric Sheep screensaver graphics came to the rescue when it was time to clock the video. Ain't nobody like Sturgill in country music. Find out why he's so metamodern in our Footnotes chat.
