As far as a rapper’s go, Smino’s musical infinity pool is deeper than most. That women, weed, and alcohol are his central muses - such is the case on his stellar third album ‘Luv 4 Rent’ - isn’t what sets him apart, of course. Tossing his ego aside, Smino interrogates familiar hip-hop themes with 360-degree perspective and jazz-influenced instrumentation. On “Louphoria,” a fuzzy electric guitar and reverby vocals decay into each other while he wonders if the strain he’s smoking is leading to romantic paranoia. J. Cole jumps into the album early for “90 Proof,” on which the duo swap drinking stories over a joyous OutKast-style beat. “Ole Ass Kendrick” recollects a backseat hookup while ’Section.80’ blares on the car speaker. Smino paints with with every color. And since he came up playing in the church, it’s a given that the thirty-one year old is all tapping into the supporting players. The impressive troupe he brought to the studio for this exclusive session added even more layers to the album’s shining deep cuts. Feel free to bob your head along with them.
