Advanced Music Theory -Dodecaphonic, Octatonic and X-Y and Z Cells
In this episode we explore more advanced concepts of scales, pitch cells and 12 Tone Rows. I discuss terms and concepts to know for the contemporary composer. Some of these concepts were created as a way for people to analyze the developing music of the time. As Atonality and Serial Music was flourishing in the early 20th century, theorists needed to come up with new terms to explain these new composition techniques. While I prefer many of the jazz terms or nomenclature for some of these concepts, it's important to also know the appropriate terminology used by contemporary music theorists.
Terms Discussed:
Diatonic
Pentatonic
Hexatonic
Octatonic
Dodecaphonic
Tetrachord
X-cell
Y-cell
Z-cell
