“When we first got the list of possible songs and saw that ‘Stolen
Dance’ was available our first reaction was: Let’s pick that one!
Because we first knew the band through that song. But ‘Stolen
Dance’ had been chosen by another artist a few hours ago (you
can’t imagine the wonderful idea we had for that video! lol)
So we listened to every song on the list and ‘The Game’ was the
one we liked the most. We felt identified with the lyrics or rather with
what we interpreted from the lyrics, because songs can have as
many interpretations as people who listen to them.
We’ve seen a lot of lyric videos throughout the years and most of
them are usually animated. Therefore the first aesthetic decision we
made was to film live action to make something different. Although
we wondered… does it look too much like a music video? What’s
the difference between a lyric video and a music video? Only the
fact that the lyrics appear on the screen? And so, between many
philosophical conversations about the origin of lyric videos we
started searching for ideas and references.
We wanted to tell a story about grief and change in a person’s life.
When nothing will ever be the same and no matter how much you
don’t want to all you can do is get your things and leave. Move on
and keep on moving.
Along with the animator Frank Guzman we decided to display the
lyrics in a messy and chaotic way; somehow that represents his
mind, his feelings of guilt and search for redemption that haunt and
surround him.
We as filmmakers often use humor and absurdity as tools to tell
stories; and although in this case we are showing a mourning
process, we didn’t want to represent it in a solemn way, but in an
absurd and ambiguous way. We chose to work from that place to
avoid a common place for the video to have a differential.
But of course lyric videos, like songs, can have as many
interpretations as people watching them.”
