Lola Young - FAKE. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2022, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.

"We should make love sometime with the lights on, what do you say?” Lola Young’s not shy. Not at all. The 20-year-old South Londoner is dedicated to chipping away at a tune’s emotions until she hits bedrock, and when you commit to that job, you’re basically laying yourself bare. Whether she’s using her fierce voice to coo along a jazzy samba in “Burn,” or explode in emotion like she does on “Ruin My Make Up,” she’s made a choice to be super vulnerable in front of the world. That candor is where her power comes from, and perhaps it’s not unusual for a woman who believes Joni Mitchell’s achingly confessional ‘Blue’ is a perfect album. Check Lola’s “Pill or a Lullabye (4AM till sunrise),” a piano and voice self-investigation with the refrain, “I’m not tired/I’m just scared to turn the lights on.” Maybe she learned to be that blunt at the famed BRIT school, or maybe it’s always been a part of her. Young wrote her first tunes when she hit her teen years, and time spent in open mic competitions and other music industry shows fueled her desire for success and taught her the need for “resilience.” Piercing honesty was behind “6 Feet Under” as well, the song that initially got her name on tastemaker’s tongues. At the start of 2020, she was signed to Capitol Records. Thereafter, her “Woman” video proved Young as a true artist ready to push some buttons. Touting the beauty and power of its subject matter, its female-only cast was filmed fully nude. This year’s “FAKE” is another high water mark. Young has never sounded so authoritative… except in our DSCVR Artists To Watch performances. It’s time to absorb the emotional clout Lola Young revels in. Time, as she likes to sing, “to leave the fake shit at home.”
