For the last year or so I've been advising the Google team in their building of something quite thrilling. It's called MusicFX DJ – a sort of master-amalgamator of sonic elements. With it, you can shape music and sound in real-time using a wide range of prompts: instruments and genres, but also emotions, abstract images, and even made up words — to create a non-linear, weird, continuously evolving tapestry of sound.

As somebody who has long been obsessed by never-before-heard sounds, this process has fully delighted me. Some of the most interesting ideas are sparked from the process of collaging unlikely elements together, and this tool has led me to explore this in an entirely new way. Its continuous evolving nature makes it feel like orchestrating or arranging – a marvellous sort of sonic soup that can be steered in meaningful and uncharted directions.

In this rushing tide of new technology, I think it's important to cultivate tools that facilitate new and unusual creative thinking, and are not just imitative of what already exists. What I love about this tool is that it's not designed to replicate my style or any other artists’ - rather to explore and create fresh and unique sounds in real time. I've been immensely encouraged, working with the Google team at their interest in designing a tool that embraces the bizarre, rewards risk-taking, and is freeing for creative folk of all kinds.
