Is It OK To Use Autotune For Singing?

As with all technology, it can be a good and a bad thing.

When autotune first came out, it was a bit of a novelty. One of the first songs to use autotune was Cher's famous song "Believe". It had a very robotic, computerized vocal sound that was more of a schtick or an electronic effect than a main staple for pitch.

Before long, autotune was being way over-used as a very obvious "effect" but still not at the level of relying on it for virtually every note in a song for pitch.

In this new world of "AI", we are finding that computers are atrophying our natural human abilities in every aspect of our lives. As silly as this may sound and in fear of sounding a bit of an "alarmist", it must be said.

We once used to travel by land or sea, by foot, by horseback or by boat, navigating by nothing more than the stars, traveling thousands of miles and reaching our destination with pinpoint accuracy. Today, many people rely on their GPS systems so heavily that they don't even know how to navigate their own cities for weeks or even months without the aid of their GPS.

I believe this has happened at so many levels. We once used to read books and allow our creative imaginations to take us to far-away places. Everyone experienced different interpretations, but we were still wowed by the magic of a great novel, poem, or story.

And at the advent of movies and TV, we are finding ourselves letting Hollywood do all of our thinking for us, turning our minds and brains off and surrendering our imaginations to those responsible for making such films.

In the name of technology and making our lives "easy", plenty has made us poor.

And as the generations roll along, the entitlements of technology are handicapping our hard work ethic and our ability to sharpen our minds and bodies.

This couldn't be more true for this generation of "Singers".

Where once we took two, three, or even four hours of practice per day to strive towards virtuosity, we now rely heavily on AI to do this work for us.

This isn't just true for singing. This is also true for learning to play instruments, and the list goes on and on within the realm of music.

In this video, we explore the dichotomy of this technology and what can be done about it.
