Hurricane Harvey is one of the most costly hurricanes in American history. In Texas and Louisiana, more than 30-trillion gallons of rain has damaged or destroyed more than 200,000 homes and totaled more than a million cars.
"As a Texan, I was heartbroken to see the effects of Hurricane Harvey," says our bass singer, Tim Foust. "And as a native of Nederland, it's devastating knowing that 500,000 people have been affected in my community alone."
The Beaumont area is smaller than Houston, and as a result, they’ve received far less coverage in the media.
And so today, Home Free is proud to stand with Tim to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey, and in particular, Beaumont and its surrounding communities.
To get things started we have donated $20,000.00, and we are challenging our fans to come together to match that amount.
The money raised through this YouCaring campaign will go to the Nederland Church of Christ Disaster Relief Fund and the Southeast Texas Food Bank, both of whom are doing amazing work in the Beaumont area. Tim's family is still in Nederland, and his mother and sister have been actively volunteering with hurricane relief. They will be personally overseeing the Church of Christ efforts.
While Tim's mom, Dena, and his childhood home are fine, many in surrounding communities are not. Beaumont lost its entire supply of clean water. Several schools are closed indefinitely.
The money raised here on YouCaring will go to help Southeast Texas get back on their feet. Food, water, shelter, school supplies, beds, cleaning supplies, tools, etc - there are so many things that they need right now. And we're working with folks on the ground there to make sure they get them.
The Nederland Church of Christ Disaster Relief Fund is a brand new entity, established for this endeavor. It is a Texas-based 501(c)(3) pending corporation, meaning that your donation should be tax deductible. Organizers have filed the appropriate requests with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Texas tax authorities for tax-exempt non-profit status. We expect this will take 4 to 8 weeks to complete, making donations tax deductible for the 2017 calendar year.
And in this tough time, we want to bring some levity and joy to the lives of everyone who is just now beginning the process of rebuilding as well as celebrate the way we've seen Texans come together to help one another. So, we’ve recorded a special version of The Little Texas song, God Blessed Texas.
All the proceeds from the sales and streams of that recording will also be going to benefit Southeast Texas.
Be sure to look out for that in the next couple of days.
Texas, we love you. We stand with you. We’re ready to help. And we know all our Home Fries are with you, too.
