Around 1998, a few months before we released the Puamana record, Irmgard and her daughters moved into Mountain Apple Company Studios at Palehua for an entire week, completely uninterrupted, isolated from the distractions of daily life. Our only purpose was the music.
Each day had a natural rhythm. We'd record through the morning, pause for lunch, talk story, then return to the studio and record again through the afternoon and into the evening.
I almost always had a digital video camera in my hand. The footage was never meant to be formal documentation, just home video. But looking back, those recordings preserved something far greater than the sessions themselves. They captured the feeling of that week.
There was storytelling, laughter, and reflection. Personal memories, family memories, cultural history. And hours and hours of music.
Something important happened at Palehua that week, not just the making of a record, but the preservation of a legacy, lived in real time.
