Lots of my students struggle with figuring out how to publicize their music. Unfortunately, great music is worthless if nobody hears it! And in a field as competitive as singing, you want to get every competitive advantage that you can get. That's why I asked my good friend and vocalist Kristine Mirelle who gets absolutely amazing publicity for free for her music, how you can get major-label publicity without the label.
Kristine is a songwriter, vocalist and performer that appeared in international commercials, placed top 10 in The X Factor, won four National piano competitions and even sang the national anthem at the LA Dodgers Stadium. These days, Kristine shares music industry contacts with Independent Artists in her book Go Viral. This is how she helps artists promote their music better.
However, all of the contacts in the world can't help you if you don't know how to pitch your music using these four key steps.
Step number one, you need to decide what you're promoting. Is it a tour, a new album, a special live stream or merch? Don't overthink it, and don't reinvent the wheel. Just decide what it is that you're promoting.
In step number two, you'll create your unique story that makes it a no-brainer decision to promote you and media. Unfortunately, this is where most artists totally fail. They think their music is good enough by itself. However, major outlets need to make revenue in order to continue their programming. Which is why it's so important that you create a compelling story that gives them a great reason to feature you and your music.
In step number three, you'll put all of this information into a presentable format. You’ll create an electronic press kit, write a press release promoting your story, and shoot a high-quality video demonstrating that you're good on camera. Then you'll put all of this online so that it's very easy to send out.
In the fourth and final step, you need to take action. Now that you have decided what you're going to promote, have come up with a fantastic story that's guaranteed to get you attention, and you put it all together online, you need to find a list of Industry contacts to reach out to and promote your music too. Luckily, Kristine has an amazing book called Go Viral with over 4,000 industry contacts for you to reach out to.
